Aveiro Half-Day Tour with 1-Hour Cruise

Explore the canals and Art Nouveau heritage of Aveiro, Portugal’s “Venice of the Atlantic,” on a guided day trip from Porto. Walk the historic center, learn about the city’s Roman-era salt economy, and glide aboard a traditional moliceiro boat past the striped houses of Costa Nova beach.

Details

Depart Porto and head south to Aveiro, a coastal city set along the Ria de Aveiro lagoon. Upon arrival, join a guided walking tour through the historic center to see Art Nouveau residences, narrow footbridges over the canals, and Baroque-style cathedrals that make the city’s architecture distinctive.

The tour includes an overview of Aveiro’s evolution from a small fishing settlement to the second-most-populous city in the Centro Region. You will also hear how salt production in the surrounding marshes sustained the local economy since Roman times.

After the walking tour, step aboard a traditional moliceiro boat—once used to harvest seaweed from the lagoon—for a cruise along the waterways. From the canals, you will see the colorful fishermen’s houses at Costa Nova beach and enjoy wide views over the lagoon and coastline.

Very interesting tour, half a day is enough and not tiring. The colorful houses in Costa Nova are very beautiful, the boat ride in Aveiro is interesting for both adults and children. It was a fun day.

This is a great tour, short and sweet! Interesting commentary en route, nd interesting to see beautiful Costa Nova and go on the boat ride in Aveiro. Could have done with longer in Aviero to look around and have a drink but then it is a half day tour! Worth the outing to see a different environment and enjoy a change of pace. Cuber the guide was excellent. Thank you

Aveiro and Costa Nova were very unique towns to visit. Very much enjoyed both. Carlos was a great guide. I would’ve liked to have spent at least an hour or so longer in Aveiro and Costa Nova to see more of the streets, shops, and restaurants. Felt a bit rushed.
