Boat Tour of the 3 Islands & Portovenere

Discover the coastal beauty of Portovenere and its surrounding islands on a relaxing boat tour from La Spezia. Cruise past historic villages, dramatic cliffs, and hidden coves before enjoying free time to explore Portovenere at your own pace.

Details

Experience an authentic local journey as you uncover the natural and cultural highlights of Portovenere and its surrounding islands. The untouched landscapes of Palmaria, Tino, and Tinetto offer a glimpse into wild coastal scenery, enriched by centuries of history shaped by the communities who once lived here.

Your experience begins aboard a comfortable floating lounge, setting a relaxed tone before departure. As you sail along the Gulf of Poets, you will pass by the charming village of Fezzano, known for its colorful houses and small harbor that still reflect its traditional fishing heritage. Continuing on, admire Le Grazie, one of the largest seaside villages in the area, home to an ancient Roman villa and an important Italian Navy base.

From the water, you will see the remains of Torre Scola, a historic sea tower dating back to the Maritime Republics, once used for defense. The route then takes you past Palmaria Island, where rugged cliffs, rocky beaches, and hidden caves define the landscape. Nearby, Tino Island reveals a mysterious lighthouse, World War II tunnels carved into the rock, and the ruins of a medieval abbey. On the small Tinetto Island, you can spot traces of an ancient Etruscan temple and the statue of Stella Maris, a landmark for sailors.

You will also pass through the striking Byron’s Grotto, a natural sea cave linked to local legend and literary history.

The tour continues to Portovenere, often considered the gateway to the Cinque Terre. Here, you can enjoy around an hour of free time to explore. Wander through the narrow Caruggio alley lined with shops, visit the Church of San Pietro, perched dramatically above the sea, or relax by the water. You may also choose to swim in the clear waters or enjoy a leisurely meal at one of the local restaurants.

At the end of the experience, return to the floating lounge along the Morin Promenade, concluding a day that combines scenic views, history, and time to explore at your own pace.

This was a memorable trip on a RIB with our friendly and knowledgeable guide Nick. As well as a tour around the islands and outside caves, there was time for a swim off the boat for 10 minutes. Despite what other reviews have said, it was so easy to find the meet up on the promenade. Portovenere was great though could have done with more time as an hour was too short by the time you get your bearings. Time enough for drink or ice cream there but not food. Such fun on a hot day.

Good location, easy walk from the cruise terminal. All the staff really nice people. Tour is about 3 hours with time for a swim and a stop off in Portenvere.

Boat ride was very comfortable and the boat captain was knowledgeable and attentive to the passengers. The La Spezia harbor is sheltered and comfortable if you are unsure of you sick sickness.

Depending on the day, get ready for some big waves. The skipper was great and a skilled operator in the big waves.

"The trip to Porto Venere is about 45' and we see from the boat the 3 islands around , without stopping and after they leave us 4h in this port! The official boat from the city of La Spezia made the same trip 3X less expensive..."

This was a great trip! The boat ride was very refreshing and fun! Our driver was great and nice. He shared a lot about our surroundings and was knowledgeable. We were able to swim at a certain point during our boat ride for a bit and it was great! The water was refreshing and the driver picked a good spot. Our boat ride continued and we reached the charming town of Portonevere, where we were dropped off for about an hour to do whatever we liked. My family and I strolled through the street and found a great swimming spot where we enjoyed the rest of our break. Be careful on the rocks! Anyways, the ride back was great too and the workers gave us post cards. Yay!

Our young captain did a great job showing us the sights and describing them well in English. We truly loved Portovenere, its church, castle, and one of the best pizzas on our trip! We also truly loved what the stores had to offer. Having said that, the only minor quibble is that we felt four hours was a little long. We were ready to go after 3.5 hours.
