Bruges Walking Tour & Free Time

Our excursion begins at Bargeplein (Katelijnparking), where the bus will drop us off. You will have 10 minutes for a restroom break, after which the guide will inform you of the exact time to return to the bus.

Our first stop is Minnewater Lake, also known as the “Lake of Love.” Surrounded by a beautiful and romantic landscape, the guide will introduce the history of Bruges and share the touching love legend connected to this lake.

Next, we visit the Begijnhof, founded in 1245. This peaceful and historic place tells the story of a remarkable community of independent women who lived here during the Middle Ages.

We then continue to Walplein Square, where the guide will explain the long and rich tradition of Bruges beer, followed by a walk through Stoofstraat, where you will learn how to recognize authentic medieval houses.

Passing by Mariastraat, you will have the opportunity to take beautiful photos from a charming little bridge.

At St. John’s Hospital, one of the oldest hospitals in Europe, the guide will explain how the medieval healthcare system worked in Bruges. Just nearby stands the Church of Our Lady, where the guide will talk about the famous white marble sculpture “Madonna and Child” by Michelangelo, located inside the church.

In front of the Gruuthuse Museum, you will learn about one of the most powerful families of Bruges during the 17th and 18th centuries. We then stop at the picturesque Boniface Bridge, a perfect spot for photos and legends.

The tour continues to Rozenhoedkaai (Quai du Rosaire), the most photographed place in Bruges, where the guide will explain the history behind this iconic view. Next, at Huidenvettersplein (Tanners’ Square), you will discover how leather tanners worked in medieval times.

At Burg Square, you will see important landmarks such as the Gothic Town Hall, the Old Court House, and the Basilica of the Holy Blood. Our guided tour concludes at The Markt (Grote Markt), where the guide will describe the surrounding buildings and offer recommendations on where to eat and where to buy traditional Belgian chocolate.

After the guided tour, you will enjoy approximately 2 hours of free time to explore Bruges at your own pace (depending on traffic and the rhythm of the group).

Finally, we meet again at Bargeplein (Katelijnparking), where the bus will be waiting to take us back to Amsterdam.

It was a charming tour. The tour guide was very accommodating. It was a cold day but that added to the charm.

If you are wondering if the long drive is worth the side trip, the answer is YES. Bruges is wonderful. The team were all very nice (Rafa, Diego and driver M who was very very skilled). I would give the tour company a 4.9/5 with suggestions for perfection…. 1) Have someone at the departure location earlier so that the arriving clients don’t start the day with uncertainty. 2) The local guide should do some of the historical background while walking - Walk and talk. After the three hour bus ride we were all anxious to get to the city centre and the backgrounder could have been delivered while we were walking. Don’t let these small points detract from the day. It was really very good.

Fluent English speaker. Peter was very knowledgeable of Bruges' history. He also recommended different stores to try the famous Belgian chocolate, waffle, and fries.
