A nice tour, the guide speaks German very well and knows a lot about the history and architecture of Amsterdam. So you find out things that you wouldn't normally find out. But that's what a tour like this is for, among other things. We can only recommend the “German” tour. Especially when you take them at dusk and the lights on the bridges and buildings come on, you get really nice photos. On board there are Heinecken (€3.50), soft drinks and white wine. Everything chilled.

The canal tour was very successful. There were enough drinks on site. However, it was a mixed plate with snacks and not three Bitterballen per person, which was not agreed. The boat was 15 minutes late, but we were informed about this. A photo of the jetty for better orientation would have been nice and would have made things easier. The driver was probably already looking forward to the end of the day.

Great food! Super nice service. Unfortunately, we had bad luck with another guest who misbehaved completely. The good man had probably already looked too deeply into the glass beforehand. You have to expect something like that... The trip is still highly recommended. Amsterdam is a dream, especially at night. 😀

I came with a few friends and we didn't know where to go out, so we booked our Amsterdam Nightlife ticket and received a list of clubs, which really helped us decide where to spend the night. We even got drinks there, which was amazing ! I really like the Holland Casino as well, I definitely recommande it !

We learned about these tours through friends. The tour actually consists of a number of sub tours. We did the tour in south Amsterdam (Rivierenbuurt) and the one in the Plantagebuurt on one day. The tour to Kamp Amersfoort, the Verscholen Dorp and Westerbork we did on a second day. The first covered Anne's life before she and her family went in hiding and led us along a number of significant places (Euterpe straat, headquarters and interrogation place of the SD!). The second drew the greater picture of the rounding up and deportation of the Jewish inhabitants of Amsterdam. The second day we went to Kamp Amersfoort. This had actually been set up in the same way as the bigger camps like Auschwitz. The tour then went on to the Verscholen Dorp, a number of underground dwellings deep in the woods near Vierhouten. Finally we went to Westerbork, the camp from which the trains departed for the German concentration camps. We found these tours very interesting. Martin was knowledgeable and explained well.If you want to learn about Anne's life in a short time and not just by visiting the Achterhuis, do one or more of these tours!

The tour is amazing and you enjoy a stunning view while smoking. I think it's a MUST if you traveled to Amsterdam for the 420 culture. The guide was cool and explained us some highlights and facts about the city, architecture, museums... However, I wouldn't recommend it solo because the other people is not very friendly to talk with strangers, or maybe I had bad luck

Information about the red light district was great. Our guide Marian Williams responded very well to all of our questions and answered them all. We would have liked to have been able to take a look behind the scenes (e.g. into a sex workers' room), since the tour also has the title: "Behind closed curtains"

Best Tours and Excursions in Amsterdam — Alle Travel
Amsterdam is a city that unfolds beautifully from its waterways — gliding beneath centuries-old bridges, past crooked canal houses, and along tree-lined stretches that haven't changed much since the Golden Age. But there's plenty beyond the canals too, from the windmill-dotted countryside to car-free villages reachable on a day trip. On this page you'll find a curated selection of Amsterdam tours and experiences — from canal cruises through the historic centre and boat parties to day trips to the Dutch countryside. Browse what's available, compare options, and book the experiences that fit the kind of trip you have in mind.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Amsterdam canal cruises suitable for children?
Daytime sightseeing cruises are family-friendly, and many operators offer free or discounted tickets for young children. Cheese and stroopwafel cruises tend to be a hit with kids. Evening drink-focused cruises, booze boats, and smoke-friendly experiences are designed for adults. Each excursion page lists age policies, so check before booking if you're travelling with younger ones.
What is the best way to experience Amsterdam's canals?
A canal cruise is the most popular starting point — and for good reason. Floating past the gabled merchant houses, under arched bridges, and along the Golden Bend gives you a perspective no walking route can match. Options range from hour-long sightseeing cruises with audio guides to intimate small-group boats with unlimited drinks and Dutch snacks. For something more personal, private luxury cruises let you set the pace with your own skipper.
Which Amsterdam canal cruise should I choose?
It depends on the experience you're after. A classic panoramic cruise with an audio guide is ideal for first-time visitors who want an overview of the city's landmarks. Cheese and wine cruises add a tasting element. Evening cruises show off Amsterdam's illuminated bridges and canal houses after dark. If you're travelling with friends, a private boat with drinks and a silent disco turns the canals into your own floating venue. Browse the options and match the format to the mood you're looking for.
Are day trips from Amsterdam worth it?
Absolutely — some of the Netherlands' most memorable scenery is less than an hour from the city. Zaanse Schans gives you windmills, traditional clog workshops, and cheese-making demonstrations. Giethoorn — sometimes called the Dutch Venice — is a car-free village best explored by boat. And during tulip season, a trip to the Keukenhof gardens is hard to beat. Full-day excursions with round-trip transport from Amsterdam make these destinations easy to reach without renting a car.
How far in advance should I book Amsterdam excursions?
Popular canal cruises — especially evening sailings with drinks and weekend departures — can fill up quickly, so booking a day or two ahead is a good habit. For day trips to Giethoorn, Zaanse Schans, or Keukenhof, booking several days in advance is recommended as group sizes are often limited. During peak season (April–August), securing your spot early ensures you get your preferred date and time.
What is the cancellation policy?
Most Amsterdam excursions on Alle Travel offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure, with a full refund. This lets you book confidently even if your schedule isn't fully locked in. A small number of special experiences may have different terms — always check the cancellation conditions on the specific booking page.
What should I wear for a canal cruise in Amsterdam?
Most canal boats are covered or partially covered, so you're sheltered from light rain. That said, open boats offer the best views and photo opportunities, so dressing in layers is wise — it can feel cooler on the water, especially during evening cruises. Comfortable shoes are fine for boat excursions, but if you're combining a cruise with a walking tour, choose something suited to cobblestones.
What landmarks will I see on a canal cruise?
Most canal cruises pass Amsterdam's major waterside landmarks — the Anne Frank House, the Skinny Bridge (Magere Brug), the Maritime Museum, the Golden Bend with its grand merchant houses, and rows of characteristic houseboats. Some routes extend toward the Rijksmuseum and the flower market. Commentary — either live or via audio guide — provides the historical context as you float past.
Can I combine a canal cruise with other Amsterdam experiences?
That's a great way to structure your day. A morning walking tour or museum visit pairs naturally with an afternoon canal cruise, and finishing with an evening sailing — perhaps with wine and snacks — rounds things off nicely. Day trip excursions to the countryside return you to the city in time for a late cruise. The flexibility of scheduling makes it easy to layer experiences without overlap.
Are excursions conducted in English?
Yes — the majority of group and private excursions are guided in English. Several canal cruises also offer audio commentary in Dutch, German, French, Spanish, and other languages. A number of operators run dedicated German-language cruises as well. Available languages are listed on each excursion page, so confirm before booking if you need a specific option.
When is the best time of year for Amsterdam tours?
Each season brings something different. Spring (mid-March through May) is tulip season — the Keukenhof gardens are in full bloom and the city feels alive. Summer offers the longest days and warmest evenings, ideal for open-boat cruises and outdoor exploration, though it's also the busiest period. Autumn is quieter with golden light along the canals. Winter has its own appeal — the Amsterdam Light Festival illuminates the waterways from November to January, making evening cruises especially atmospheric.
