From Florence: Full-Day Tour of Tuscany Countryside
On a full-day private excursion departing from Florence, take a sightseeing tour of Tuscany's towns, villages, and countryside and step back in time to the Etruscans, Romans and Middle Ages.
You will begin by traveling to Pisa, a quaint town that still bears resemblance to the Pisan Republic's glory. The stunning Piazza dei Miracoli, also known as the "Square of Miracles," is where you'll find the fabled Leaning Tower, Baptistery, and medieval Duomo.
Continue on to San Gimignano, a famous Etruscan village known for its Vernaccia wines and medieval towers. Before driving to the walled settlement of Monteriggioni, which the Sienese built in the 13th century to watch over the Roman Via Cassia from its hillside location, stroll the narrow streets of this pearl of medieval Tuscany.
The romantic center of Siena, best known for the annual Palio horse race held in the shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, is the next stop. The Gothic cathedral and the Torre del Mangia's taut needle dominate the city's medieval skyline. The Palazzo Pubblico, which is an outstanding piece of architecture in its own right and houses an important museum, should also not be missed.
See the charming Chianti region on your way back to Florence. It is made up of rolling hills with vineyards, cypress trees, olive groves, and small hamlets. You'll stop in Greve and Panzano, two of the most stunning Chianti towns. Additionally, a time permitting break at a winery to sample world-renowned Chianti wines and extra virgin olive oils produced locally.
