New City Hall

New City Hall

The New City Hall (Nová radnice) on Mariánské náměstí is the current seat of Prague City Hall, built 1908–11 in Art Nouveau style to a design by Osvald Polívka, decorated with allegorical sculptures by Josef Mařatka and Stanislav Sucharda and folkloric figures including Rabbi Loew and the Iron Knight. The building is best known among visitors for its paternoster elevator — a continuously moving chain of open cabins with no doors that operates without stopping, one of the last functioning paternosters accessible to the public in Prague. The organised after-hours tour is the only way to ride it, as the lift is normally reserved for staff. The façade on Mariánské náměstí also features a notable sculpture of the Iron Knight and a figure of Rabbi Loew — whose legend is connected to the nearby Jewish Quarter — making it a visually rich stop even without entering.
