Details

Amsterdam’s Jordaan district offers a rich culinary landscape that can be challenging to navigate alone. On this small-group food and walking tour, an expert guide will lead you to local hotspots where you can sample traditional Dutch dishes and drinks, including Gouda cheese, Dutch apple pie, and herring. The tour focuses on authentic tastings and quieter locations, giving you an insightful and relaxed experience off the main tourist trail.

Begin your tour in Jordaan, a former working-class neighborhood transformed into a popular culinary area. Walk along the UNESCO-listed canals and explore specialty cafes and respected eateries that highlight the district’s food culture. Visit eight local shops and restaurants where traditional Dutch flavors are preserved, including a 400-year-old café serving classic apple pie, aged Gouda paired with wine, bitterballen accompanied by jenever, and pickled herring. You’ll also encounter subtle international influences from Indonesian and Surinamese cuisine.

Enjoy drinks included throughout the tour while listening to engaging stories and historical insights about Dutch gastronomy. Along the way, you’ll pass notable landmarks such as Anne Frank’s House, and the tour concludes at the original departure point, leaving you with a deeper understanding of both local flavors and cultural history.

It was a good tour. I enjoy most of the places that we went to. Glad I was introduced to some of the local dishes, but there was just something missing. I cant fully put my finger on it, but a bit more oomph, more history. I would recommend it, though.

"Awesome food tour! Easy to find the tour guide at the beginning. Stephanie was great and verified an allergy I have and made sure to swap a dish for me. All the spots she brought us were local and everything tasted great! She also told us about some Amsterdam history throughout the tour. Great experience!"

Paul, our tour guide, was charming, informative and humorous. We learned a lot about Amsterdam and tried some herring, which I thought I would hate, but enjoyed. We also tried Jenever a traditional juniper based gin which was delicious. Would recommend to anyone.

"Wonderful tour with Gerard and a small group last Thursday night, highly recommend as a way to start your time in Amsterdam! I booked a last minute long weekend in AMS without much of a plan, then got to looking for activities—I love starting my time in a new city with a food tour, making a nice long list of places to go back to. I am traveling solo, so I tacked onto a group of three (coincidentally from my hometown in the U.S.!). The food is the perfect lineup of local staples, the other locals I met this weekend confirmed we hit all the right foods in all the right places. The samples definitely added up to a full meal’s worth, with apple pie for dessert! The tour was a nice amount of walking with stops mixed well throughout and we learned a good deal of history and city-lore as well! Gerard has lived in AMS his whole life and was happy to share his perspective and experiences. He was a joy to have as a tour guide and I would enthusiastically recommend his tour to anyone in the area."
