Danube Bend Day Trip

Explore three historic Hungarian towns—Visegrád, Esztergom, and Szentendre—on a single Danube Bend tour. Discover medieval royal history, Hungary’s grandest cathedral, and baroque streets with riverside views, all guided and fact-filled. Note: due to low Danube water levels, the return from Szentendre to Budapest is by coach, not boat, until mid-August.

Details

This Danube Bend tour takes you to three distinctive riverside towns: Visegrád, Esztergom, and Szentendre. With a guide, you will explore local architecture, medieval history, and scenic viewpoints along the way.

In Visegrád, you will walk near the 750-year-old remains of the former Royal Residence (entry to the interior is not included). Your guide will share stories of daily life in the Middle Ages, and you will have time to take in the wide panorama over the Danube valley.

At Esztergom, often called the northern gate of Budapest, you will visit Hungary’s largest cathedral—the centre of the country’s Catholic Church. It is also the burial place of prominent cardinals, including Primate József Mindszenty. After the cathedral, you will stop to view the opposite riverbank, where Slovakia lies just across the water.

On the return leg, the tour pauses in Szentendre, a small baroque town at the meeting point of the Danube and the Pilis Hills. Built on medieval foundations, this settlement is known for its artists’ community and quiet charm. You will have time to wander its narrow streets, climb to a lookout point, and enjoy the view over the river before the journey back to Budapest.

Important Info

Occasionally the tour might be bilingual, featuring English and another language. Boat trip: May–Sept (Thu, Fri, Sat & Sun) – in case of high or low water levels, and during the low season, the return journey is by coach.
