What to expect:

Delve deep into Venice’s history with a 3-hour guided tour of St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge's Palace, either as a private tour or shared group experience. Take in two of the city’s most important landmarks while discovering the history of the one-time mercantile capital of the Mediterranean.

Start by exploring St. Mark's Square with your guide before heading into the cathedral. From the first-floor terrace you’ll be able to admire views across the lagoon and see the famous bronze horses up close. Hear how they traveled all the way to Paris and back in Napoleon’s time.

St. Mark's Basilica sometimes closes to visitors without warning. If this happens, visit the Church of San Zaccaria or the Correr Museum instead, depending on availability. Take a tour of the beautifully ornate 15th-century church and its flooded crypt or learn about the art and history of Venice.

Next, you’ll use the priority entrance to reach Doge's Palace, formerly the residence of the leader of the Republic of Venice. Enjoy visiting the Chamber of the Great Council and courtrooms among other things. Highlights include frescoes by Tintoretto and the Giants’ Staircase.

After this, cross the infamous Bridge of Sighs that links to the New Prisons. Learn how the bridge got its name and the purpose for its construction in the 17th century as you take in the amazing views of the canals.

At the end of your tour, feel free to stay and explore the Doge’s Palace with tips from your guide.

Important to know:

• People with mobility impairments should be aware that the stairs to the upper part of the Basilica (Museum and Terrace) are steep and at times uneven
• Shared group and private options do not always offer the same languages. Please check all languages of interest to find your preferred option type
• St. Mark's Basilica is sometimes closed to visitors at short notice. If this is the case, you will visit the 15th-century Church of San Zaccaria and its crypt or the Correr Museum to learn about the art and history of Venice
• You are welcome to explore the Doge's Palace at leisure after the guided tour
• The Doge's Palace is asking visitors over 13 years old to show their passport/ID
• As St. Mark’s Basilica is a holy place, people are asked to wear clothing that covers the shoulders and knees
• Backpacks or large bags are not allowed inside St. Mark's Basilica

The guide teaches us what was happening in each room of the palace, about the Republic of Venice, the little-known French history of the Battle of Lesventes and Napoleon and deciphers the works. Thanks to the headphones you don't miss a beat. On the upper floor of the basilica, outside, she talks to us about present-day Venice and we can ask her questions.

Our guide, Andrea was excellent. The only negative was the line for the women’s restroom was way too long due to a toilet being out of order. Other than that the place was beautiful and the guide very knowledgeable.

The tour was excellent and very well thought out. It's all because of the very friendly and knowledgeable tour guide. She had a great command over the language, it was easy to get through what she was explaining and she was very personable. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Venice. 5 stars

Our guide was fantastic. It was an excellent historical trek and she was both masterful, and joyful at explaining it all. When you think of navigating the vast crowds visiting magical Venice (and it is so very magical) - your time is also valuable. This experience made it very easy to receive so much in return. Thank you!

Very interesting . Perfect guide! On the other hand, the cost is much too high. We hesitated for a long time!!!

I loved everything about this tour! St. Mark's Basilica is stunningly beautiful and was by far my favorite Basilica out of all of the ones we saw while visiting Italy. Accessing the terrace was also a nice add to this tour as the views from the terrace really showed you the entire square. We were also able to witness the time change on the Clock Tower from the terrace which was amazing to see from the higher angle. The Doge's Palace did not disappoint either. The history of the Palace and what took place there was very interesting as well. Our guide Elena (sorry if I'm misspelling it) was excellent! She was very personable, kept a nice pace, and was very knowledgeable. I like tours with informative guides but sometimes feel the guides overload you with too much information. I felt she did a great job at balancing this by providing the information without being excessive and kept my attention throughout the entire tour. I highly recommend this tour and Elena!
