The Prague Metronome is a distinctive modern landmark located on Letná Hill, overlooking the Vltava River and the historic center of Prague. The length of its metal arm reaches 20 meters, making the structure visible from many parts of the city. Originally, the metronome was installed as a temporary exhibition object.
According to the initial plan, the metronome was supposed to be dismantled after the end of the exhibition. However, city authorities later decided to keep the structure as a permanent part of the urban landscape, and over time it became one of Prague’s recognizable symbols.
The metronome appears in the sixth season of the Italian TV series La Piovra (The Octopus), where its slow movement and melancholic sound, similar to a ship’s bell, enhance the atmosphere of the scene and reflect the dialogue between agent Miloš and the Italian policeman Licata. At that time, the square looked different: it had benches and was designed as a walking area for visitors.
Later, the benches and other elements were removed, and for some period the site was abandoned, while the metronome itself was not operating. Eventually, the area was revitalized and gained a new function in the city’s cultural life.
Today, the space around the Prague Metronome is a popular meeting point and a favorite place for local skateboarders, as well as for tourists who come to enjoy panoramic views of Prague and the unique atmosphere of this landmark.
