The art nouveau gem of Budapest

Right in the heart of Budapest, in the former Jewish Ghetto area stands the Grand Synagogue of the Orthodox Jewry, located in Kazinczy Street, opened in 1913.

Europe’s most outstanding Orthodox Jewish house of worship is one of the most significant Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) monuments in Hungary, and as such is protected as a national monument by the Hungarian State. Walls and the ceilings are decorated with stained mosaic windows which let in natural light, making it probably the most beautifully illuminated synagogue in Europe. Meet Hungarian Jewish culture also from its culinary side! Ever tried Cholent (Sólet) or Flodni? You can combine your visit with experiencing typical Hungarian Jewish cuisine in the glatt kosher restaurant Hanna Garden, next to the synagogue.

The landmark is an interesting mix of traditional and modern styles that was built between 1912–13 according to the plans of the Löffler brothers. It is part of a complex including a school and communal hall which is the center of the Orthodox community; also one of the most characteristic synagogues of Hungarian architecture. This synagogue is the main building of the Orthodox centre functioning like a small village in the heart of the Jewish ghetto. Around the area kosher shops, kosher butcher and even the only mikve (ritual bath) of Budapest can be found.
